Womens’ liberation vs reactionary feminist trends in Poland and Romania, with Katerina Szumiewicz

“On the Barricades” s06e33

In this special March 8 release of “On the Barricades”, host Maria Cernat invites Dr. Katerina Szumiewicz on the show. Katerina is a Polish scholar with a background in philosophy, emancipatory pedagogy and sociology who has authored a number of books, as well as a classical feminist. They discuss the history of the feminist movement and material reality of women in socialist Poland versus Romania, and how the situation changed after the economic transformation to capitalism. The post-socialist period up til now in Poland was characterized by a harsh anti-feminist backlash under the lead of Pope John Paul II, abortion being banned in 1993, as well as various resistance. Maria and Katerina discuss how the family has changed and enters the feminist ideology and argumentation, as well as prostitution– the promotion of which has become a dominant part of the pseudo-progressivism of the current woke feminist trends. Then, what about the question of the right of young people to transition genders– how is this variety of LGTBQ politics landing and impacting in the Polish and Romanian political scene and society? How do the current trends serve as a mimicry and particularly reactionary interpretation of the philosophical ideas like those of Derrida, Fouccault, etc, whose influence came from Europe to America, and back again to Eastern Europe?
