In this episode, Dr. Maria Cernat discusses a recent scandal in Romania involving private care home owners who provide peace of mind and necessary medical and social assistance to elderly people who have no relatives. The reality is that those institutions, which were privatized, are more akin to descriptions of people barely surviving in WWII-era concentration camps and a place to rest, let alone being cared for. Horrible stories have emerged of elderly people being tortured and even forced to work. Of course, there is a class component to this pathology, but it also speaks volumes about the profound demoralization that Romanian society has experienced over the last three decades to allow such barbarism to occur on a large scale.
