As a citizen of the USA, I cannot agree that my country is "fighting for survival". You may say that the elites who run the country are attempting to maintain their dominance; that's altogether a different thing than the survival of the people. Rather, their "survival" (as you put it) is their survival as those who dominate (at home and abroad).

Your way of referring to the "USA" encourages a blurring of this important distinction. Can the people of the USA imagine themselves as something other than they have been? That is the question; I see no reason why the people of the USA must inevitably be trapped by history.--any more than Ukrainians, Russians, or Italians be inevitably and irrevocably trapped by their history. But to think clearly and imagine clearly, it is necessary that we speak and think clearly from the outset.

I am sure you understand this point; I am less sure that your exact words carefully maintain the distinction.
